MIAMI — Everton have joined the race to land Manchester United defender Marcos Rojo, sources have told ESPN FC.

The injured Argentina international has returned to Manchester following his post-World Cup holiday rather than join the rest of the squad in the United States while speculation about his future rumbles on.

Sources have told ESPN FC that United are open to offers for the 28-year-old, who only signed a new contract in March, and that the player is considering his options after slipping down the pecking order last season.

He was limited to just 12 appearances in all competitions last season and was not included in Jose Mourinho’s matchday squad for the FA Cup final defeat to Chelsea in May.

Sources have told ESPN FC that new Everton boss Marco Silva is keen to bring Rojo to Goodison Park, with United likely to demand a fee of between £15 million and £20 million for the centre-back, who cost £16 million when he arrived at Old Trafford from Sporting Lisbon in 2014.

Sources have told ESPN FC that Premier League new boys Wolves also held an interest before turning their attention to other targets.

Rojo’s sale will strengthen Mourinho’s case to splash out on another centre-back.

The United manager wants a central defender and a right winger before the transfer deadline on Aug. 9, according to sources, with Leicester’s Harry Maguire, Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld and Jerome Boateng at Bayern Munich all on the list of candidates.
