Barcelona president Laporta calls for Super League; attacks Man City, PSG (& Newcastle)

Barcelona president Joan Laporta says the European Super League remains alive.

Laporta, hitting out at PSG, Manchester City and Newcastle United, made the comments at the club’s General Assembly.

He declared: “The distortion of the club-states, with unlimited resources, clearly destabilises. This causes not being able to sign stars or compromise the economic future. And UEFA, instead of putting a brake on them, what it does is give them more power.

“That is why we support the Super League, because we want a more even competition in which each club competes with its resources without the distortion of the club-states. The clubs will govern our destiny. The club-states make me laugh when they say that the Super League clubs are the rich ones. Have no doubt that the Super League would be an open league, based on meritocracy and respecting the state leagues.

“If the resolution of the European Union is favourable, we will be able to work without pressure to propose a competition format that everyone likes. Soon there will be news and by working together the whole football family will surely find solutions to this problem for all the clubs.”
