It started off a new competition that very few were interested in – partly because it seemed you needed an Oxbridge degree to understand all the varying qualification permutations – but turned into something special that has gripped us all (well a larger amount than before).
That’s correct, it’s the Uefa Nations League Finals which offers England, yes the senior England national team, a one in four chance of finally landing some silverware.
Few would have imagined it, or even cared to imagine it, when Gareth Southgate’s team lost 2-1 to Spain in their first Nations League match.
But a thrilling victory by the same scoreline over World Cup finalists Croatia in their final match has them in today’s draw.
The head honchos at Uefa have all descended on Dublin in their shiny suits for the draw, following hot on the heels of yesterday’s Euro 2020 draw.
With just four teams – England, hosts Portugal, Switzerland and Holland – to sort out it should be a short and sweet affair. But then again, this in Uefa, so expect plenty of fanfare for their shiny new competition.
There are no seedings so it will be a straight draw for the competition in June.
5 June: Semi-final 1
6 June: Semi-final 2
9 June: Third-place play-off
9 June: Final
