Report: Brek Shea approaching free-agent deal with Atlanta Untied

TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Report

Brek Shea could be heading back to the Southeast, according to a report from Goal.com’s Ives Galarcep, this time to join defending MLS Cup champion Atlanta United on a free-agent contract.

Shea, who became a free agent this offseason after the Vancouver Whitecaps did not pick up his contract option, formerly played for Atlanta rival Orlando City in 2015 and 2016. He proved reasonably productive and versatile the last two seasons, under departed ‘Caps coach Carl Robinson, scoring seven goals and adding four assists over 53 appearances (29 starts).

The question is where Shea may fit into Atlanta’s plans. As Galarcep notes, the 28-year-old who has earned 34 US national team caps can play pretty much anywhere on the left side, and should provide depth at left back with Greg Garza‘s move to expansion side FC Cincinnati.

However, Pro Soccer USA’s Mitchell Northam also notes that the Five Stripes would appear to have internal solutions at that position, at least for now. One of those, 16-year-old US youth international George Bello, has already been linked with interest from European clubs.
