According to French outlet L’Equipe, the representatives of Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere have made contact with Ligue 1 giants PSG to gauge their interest in the Englishman.
Fitness struggles
Wilshere’s injury troubles over the course of his career have been widely covered in the press, with a string of lengthy spells on the sidelines having held the technically-gifted star back from a potentially top-class career.
Following a nightmare campaign during which he managed just 3 Premier League appearances for the Gunners in 2015/16, Wilshere was sent out on loan to Bournemouth last season.
He managed a respectable 27 league outings with the Cherries, but a hairline crack in his calfbone in April ruled the marauding midfielder out until August.
Return to form
Despite being heavily linked with a move away from the Emirates last summer, Wilshere surprisingly remained in North London, with his impressive early-season performances in the Carabao Cup and Europa League having led to a Premier League recall for the Englishman.
And he has since gone on to re-establish himself as a key member of Arsene Wenger’s starting XI, with large sections of the Gunners’ fanbase now calling for the 34-time capped international to be handed a new contract at the club (his current deal is set to expire at the end of the season).
Impasse
While most had initially viewed the contract talks between Arsenal and Wilshere as a mere formality, the reality over the last few months has proven to be far more complicated.
Wilshere was said to have been left angered by the lowly wages on offer as part of the new deal tabled by the Gunners earlier this year, with the Englishman having admitted back in March that ‘things had changed’ with regards to his place at the club.
‘Positive’
Speaking in a press conference a fortnight ago, departing Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger revealed that he was ‘positive’ regarding the chances of Wilshere putting pen to paper on a new contract with the club, but, with a little over a month remaining on the midfielder’s deal in North London, a formal announcement has still yet to come.
French link
As such, a number of English clubs have already been linked with moves for Wilshere, if he does indeed become a free agent.
However, as mentioned above, the latest side to be touted as a potential destination for the Gunners’ youth product have come as a real surprise, in the form of Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain.
According to L’Equipe, Wilshere’s representatives reached out to the French giants over the last couple of days to gauge whether or not they would be interested in acquiring the 26-year-old this summer.
However, the report also adds that new PSG boss Thomas Tuchel is highly unlikely to sanction such a move.
