TRANSFER TRACKER STATUSReleased

Vancouver Whitecaps FC announced on Monday they have mutually agreed to part ways with defender Marcel de Jong. As part of the contract termination, a portion of de Jong’s contract will remain on Vancouver’s 2019 MLS salary budget.

The 32-year-old spent three seasons in Vancouver, after entering MLS in 2015 with Sporting KC. He has 52 MLS regular season appearances with a goal and five assists in his career to date, and has also made three MLS Cup Playoffs appearances for the Whitecaps.

“We are thankful to Marcel for his contributions,” said Whitecaps FC head coach Marc Dos Santos in a team statement. “He has served this club professionally and we wish him well in the future. The move allows Marcel to explore other opportunities, while we continue to make changes to our roster in preparation for the upcoming season.”

The departure continues a roster transformation in Vancouver under new head coach Dos Santos. The Whitecaps will open the 2019 MLS regular season on March 2 at home against Minnesota United FC.
