Ligue 1 club Rennes have rejected a bid from Newcastle United for their on-loan left-back Faitout Maouassa.
Newcastle are looking for reinforcements in the January window and Rafael Benitez is trying to work around the budgetary constraints at St. James’ Park.
The Spaniard wants to bring in a left-back in the winter window and it emerged recently that Newcastle have been closely scouting the French market for solutions.
And it has been claimed that the north east giants indeed made a move for a Ligue 1 left-back, but it seems their offer has been knocked back.
According to French sports daily L’Equipe, Rennes knocked back an €8m offer from Newcastle for their 20-year-old full-back Maouassa recently.
The defender is currently on loan at Nimes and has made nine appearances in Ligue 1 this season.
Newcastle sought to sign him on a permanent deal, but Rennes believe that Maouassa has further potential to grow and are not keen to let him go at the moment.
The full-back is also keen to stay at Nimes as he feels regular football in the latter half of the season could earn him a spot in the France squad for next summer’s Under-21 European Championship.
