France midfielder Yann M’Vila sat down with the Ligue 1 Show to talk about his personal Ligue 1 Conforama highlights with boyhood club Rennes and current outfit AS Saint-Etienne, who brought him back to France in 2017.
BEST GOAL
”Against Toulouse. It was a free-kick that was laid off to me and I hit it as hard as possible. I struck at the goalkeeper, he tried to punch it clear but he couldn’t, and it went in! It was something we’d worked on; we’d tested it out a lot at training, so reproducing that in a match was great. I was really happy to score that goal.”
BEST MOMENT
”In Paris, we’d had two men sent off and still managed to win the game. Cheikh Ndiaye took over in goal, and he had a great game. Yes, nine against 11 and we took the points!”
WORST MOMENT
“My third game with the pros, at Lens. I went in for a tackle. They’d already had a man sent off so the referee didn’t think twice. To be sent off in your third game, I thought that was it, the last time I would play in Ligue 1.
TOUGHEST OPPONENT
”[Yoan] Gourcuff! During my first year with the pros. He was phenomenal! He was so good it was really something! His relationship with Chamakh up front made him even better, he really caused us problems that year!”
BEST PLAYER
“Technically, Jires Kembo and Yacine Brahimi. They really stood out. One on one, you didn’t have a chance against those guys! In terms of build-up, and influence on the pitch, Jerome Leroy. It was great playing alongside him, it made life so easy. He only had to tell you where to go and it would save you a 15-20m sprint. A real pleasure!”
BEST TEAM-MATE
“At Rennes, I spent a lot of time with Yacine Brahimi. We came through the academy together, and made our debuts at the same time. At Saint-Etienne, I spend my time with Wahbi Khazri. We met at Sunderland, then found each other again here. We laugh a lot together!”
