Comment | Wenger would be perfect for Bayern Munich
Arsene Wenger might have felt his chance to take the reins at one of Europe’s true aristocrats might have passed him by.
But amid mounting speculation, the former Arsenal boss could be bound for Bayern Munich and an unlikely shot at redemption on the biggest stage.
Reports in Germany yet again suggest that Niko Kovac is not long for the job, an understandable state of affairs considering the champions frittered away a 3-1 lead against Fortuna Dusseldorf last weekend. Bayern now find themselves out of the Champions League qualification places and nine points off league leaders Borussia Dortmund.
Could Wenger turn the ship around and perhaps even mount an unlikely title challenge? Who knows, but it is safe to assume he would relish the opportunity.
As he continually reminded his critics in the final years at Arsenal, he was not short of offers from European giants, including the Bavarians, during his 22 year sojourn in north London. Loyalty stopped him from moving on then but at this stage of his career Munich could offer the perfect coda for Wenger, and a chance to fill that glaring gap on his CV.
Make no mistake, on current form this Bayern side is nowhere near the upper echelon of contenders for the Champions League. However there is quality aplenty on paper at least, certainly more than Wenger has worked with for over a decade.
He might just be the perfect manager to help them show it. The similarities with Carlo Ancelotti, Pep Guardiola’s successor who was tasked with adding continental glory to domestic dominance, are problematic: both are the sort of hands-off managers who elite players relish working under until they realise they are atrophying. The Italian’s reign in Bavaria may have brought a league title but a 3-0 defeat at Paris Saint-Germain suggested Bayern couldn’t compete in Europe.
Jupp Heynckes’ interregnum offered a riposte to that as Bayern came within a goal of pipping Real Madrid to the Champions League Final, another near miss by a side whose collective quality over the past decade ought to have added up to more than one European crown.
If Bayern want a successor to Kovac as driven by the Champions League as they are then they ought to look no further than Wenger, who departed north London still bearing the scares of so many near misses in European competition. It could be argued the 69-year-old never quite got over those four brutal minutes at the Stade de France in 2006, when a Henrik Larsson-inspired Barcelona overcame 10 men who had battled in vain to secure Arsenal’s first European Cup.
Certainly Wenger was utterly broken by May’s Europa League semi-final defeat to Atletico Madrid and with it the realisation that European silverware might never come again.
There are other reasons why Wenger might prove to be a wise option at the Allianz Arena even if his reign is a brief one. Few elite managers have shown the same commitment to blooding youngsters as the Frenchman, who would surely relish working with the likes of Alphonso Davies, Renato Sanches and Serge Gnabry. And though there was often little to admire about the football in the final years of his reign when Arsenal hit their peak under the Frenchman there were few sights as stunning in European football.
Wenger’s farewell from Arsenal may have been beautifully choreographed but it would have been so much sweeter had he been able to finally claim a major continental prize. Bayern can rest assured that should they turn to the man who spurned them in the past he would do everything in his power to take them back to Europe’s peak.
What has happened to Real Madrid star Isco?
What is happening with Isco? Real Madrid coach Santiago Solari has not started the midfielder in any of his five matches in charge so far and the 26-year-old has played a total of just 78 minutes in those games.
In Monday’s pre-match press conference ahead of the Champions League clash away to Roma tonight, Solari was twice asked about Isco, but did not say very much on either occasion.
The first question attempted to get to the bottom of the matter. Why wasn’t he playing? Was it a fitness issue? A tactical reason? Is there a problem with the midfielder?
“He’s working well, just like his team-mates,” Solari said. “He’s a very important player. I’m counting on him, just like I am with the other 23.”
Later on, it was put to the Argentine that the Spanish international looks unhappy and unmotivated following his spell on the bench.
“There are 24 players and we want the best of all of them,” Solari said. “And we want the injured players back, so that it’s 24 and 21.”
Isco was key under previous coach Julen Lopetegui, starting eight of the Basque’s 14 games and scoring two goals.
Since Solari took over, however, he has played just 78 minutes: 34 as a substitute in the 2-0 win over Valladolid, 17 in the 4-2 victory away to Celta Vigo and 27 in Saturday’s 3-0 loss at Eibar.
In light of that disastrous defeat, Solari could decide to hand the midfielder a start in Rome tonight and if he does not, the questions as to why he is not playing will only increase.
