Gianluigi Buffon: Memphis Depay has impressed me the most in Ligue 1

Gianluigi Buffon has said Memphis Depay is the player who has impressed him the most since he arrived in France.

Over the summer, the veteran goalkeeper left Juventus – where he made 656 appearances and won nine Serie A titles – after 23 years in Italy to join French champions Paris Saint-Germain.

He has made five Ligue 1 appearances so far, conceding three goals and keeping two clean sheets.

Appearing on French TV show Canal Football Club, Buffon was asked if there is a player who has impressed him during his time in France so far.

The 40-year-old said: “The player who has impressed me the most since I came to France is Memphis Depay.”

Why Depay?

Buffon didn’t go into detail about why Depay was his answer, but there is sound logic behind his selection.

In Ligue 1, only Marseille star Dimitri Payet (36) has created more chances than Depay (34) so far this season.

However, the 24-year-0ld could certainly do with adding to his goal tally. Only four players have managed more shots on target than Depay (13), but he has scored only two league goals from 27 attempts in total.

The Netherlands international scored 19 goals in 36 league appearances last season.

Lyon face Angers in Ligue 1 this weekend seeking their sixth league win of the campaign.
