Diego Simeone has committed his future to Atletico Madrid and vowed to make the club stronger.
Simeone, 47, had been linked with a move away from Atletico at the end of the season, with both Arsenal and Chelsea linked.
But with Atleti in pole position to finish second to Barcelona in La Liga after Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Real Madrid at the Bernabeu, Simeone said he will still be in charge at the Wanda Metropolitano.
“I want the club to keep improving and that’s why I’m staying because I think we can keep growing,” Simeone told beIN Sports after the match. “I try to do everything possible so that everyone who grows the club stays.
“We work to improve the team, and whenever the team improves, the club will improve.”
Striker Antoine Griezmann has been linked with a summer move to Barca after rediscovering his form in recent months. Simeone reserved praise for the France international, who scored Atletico’s equaliser in the derbi.
“He is a great footballer, mentally strong,” Simeone said. “He didn’t have a good start and he knows it, but it isn’t easy to reinvent yourself as he did in December.”
