The San Jose Earthquakes have contacted Stanford head coach Jeremy Gunn about their head coaching vacancy, multiple sources have told MLSsoccer.com.
San Jose fired head coach Mikael Stahre on Sunday following the club’s 5-1 home loss on Saturday against Sporting Kansas City. The last-place Quakes, who hired Stahre just 10 months ago, are now being led by former assistant Steve Ralston on an interim basis.
Gunn has led Stanford to three consecutive NCAA College Cup titles. A college head coach since 1999 and Stanford’s manager since 2012, the Englishman has coached several current MLS players during his time in Palo Alto, including Seattle Sounders forward Jordan Morris, Chicago Fire left back Brandon Vincent, LA Galaxy defender Tomas Hilliard-Arce and Real Salt Lake attacker Corey Baird.
Gunn, who was reportedly a candidate for the Colorado Rapids head coaching job last winter, has an 87-25-21 record with the Cardinal and a 274-86-52 record in 19 total seasons as a head coach at Fort Lewis University, UNC-Charlotte and Stanford.
On Monday, Sports Illustrated’s Grant Wahl reported that the Quakes interviewed former Portland Timbers head coach Caleb Porter for their head coaching job. The sources confirmed to MLSsoccer.com that San Jose have been in touch with Porter about the position. Joel Soria, editor-in-chief of the Quakes Epicenter site, reported later Monday that San Jose inquired about the wage demands of Boca Juniors head coach and former Columbus Crew SC midfielder Guillermo Barros Schelotto.
San Jose, who lost 4-3 to Atlanta on Wednesday in Ralston’s debut as head coach, will play at LAFC on Saturday (3:30 pm ET | Univision, Twitter — Full TV & streaming info).
