The Cucumber Knight returns to Leganes as mascot

With the new La Liga season just a few days old, CD Leganes have welcomed a familiar face back to the club in a bid to spur them onto great things.

After going missing from the Estadio de Butarque for several years, a former fan favourite came striding through the main door just in time for Leganes first home game of the campaign — and with a fresh new look.

His name is Super Pepino and he’s a giant, seven-foot tall cucumber. Leganes like to call him “the Cucumber Knight” and he is sort of a cross between a Teenage Mutant Hero Turtle, Zoro and, er, a cucumber.

You may not know him, but he’s kind of a big dill.

Super Pepino will get his first outing of the new season this Sunday, when Leganes welcome Real Sociedad to their stadium.

Leganes are nicknamed Los Pepineros, or the Cucumber Growers, in reference to the city’s agricultural history, supplying fruit and vegetable produce to the people of Madrid. So perhaps it’s not quite so ridiculous as it sounds. Is it?
