Spain coach De la Fuente: Gavi injury most bitter moment of my career

Spain coach Luis de la Fuente says the knee injury suffered by Barcelona midfielder Gavi was the worst moment of his career.

Gavi suffered an ACL injury in the Euro qualifying win against Georgia yesterday.

De la Fuente said, “Right now I understand everything. It is a very hard time for the player, for Barcelona and also for the National Team, his teammates and me. It seems we had lost. Yesterday we were talking about Gavi and today this happens. This is the ugly part of football and I am very sorry for the player.

“It is the most bitter moment of my career.

“I didn’t have to see the hit. He said it was without further ado. He has stepped on badly and his knee is gone. The first action had nothing to do with the second.

“If it is not Gavi may be another. This can happen in any situation. Soccer is a risky activity. It was an accident and it was a disgrace. It is perfect for playing the game, like the rest of the teammates. It was misfortune.

“I was devastated. I did not understand that this can happen. He was tremendously hurt and sad. It looked like a wake, we were all broken. Life has these things.

“It is the most bitter moment. You see the helplessness of a footballer. It is the hardest. At the break it was difficult for me to be able to speak and express myself.

“When we talk about the footballer’s health, I don’t think about the Euros or the Games, I only think about the footballer’s health. God willing, it’s less than it sounds and it’s another type of injury. I’m only concerned about that, nothing more.”
