PSG star Dani Alves becomes most successful player in football history as Coupe de La Ligue triumph is 36th trophy of his career

DANI ALVES has become the most successful footballer in history following Paris Saint-Germain’s Coupe de la Ligue triumph over Monaco.

The Brazilian, 35, now has 36 trophies, overtaking compatriot Maxwell, who he had gone level with after winning the French Super Cup in August.

Alves started his career in 2001 with local side Bahia, winning the Copa do Nordeste in his second season.

A move to La Liga with Sevilla soon followed — but he didn’t win anything for the first three years.

However, in 2006, they won their first Uefa Cup, which they retained a year later, having won the Uefa Super Cup in between.

In 2007, they added the Copa del Rey before beating Real Madrid to win the Spanish Super Cup.

Things got even better for Alves that summer as he won his first international trophy. The right-back even netted in the final as Brazil beat Argentina to win the Copa America.

In 2008, he joined Barcelona and would significantly add to his trophy haul over the subsequent eight years.

He won the Treble twice, as well as another Champions League medal, six La Liga titles, added four more Copa del Rey gongs and enjoyed four Spanish Super Cup triumphs.

Away from Spain, he won the Uefa Super Cup and Fifa Club World Cup three times each.

In that period, he also won the Confederations Cup twice with Brazil.

In 2016, Alves joined Juventus to win the domestic double — and it could have been even better but for a defeat against Real Madrid in the Champions League final.

In 2003, he helped the Samba starlets with the Fifa World Youth Championship, but that does not count as a major trophy.

With PSG first in Ligue 1 and in the Coupe de France semi-final he could add two more before the summer. Will he finish his career in his 40s?

Andres Iniesta and Zlatan Ibrahimovic are the next active players in line, with 33 trophies apiece.

Brazilian outlet Globoesporte tried to claim Pele had 37 trophies — but they cheekily included seven unofficial friendly tournaments the football icon triumphed in.
