Former Tottenham forward Alan Gilzean mourned

Former Tottenham striker Alan Gilzean, a UEFA Cup winner with the north London club in 1971/72, has passed away at the age of 79.

Nicknamed the King of White Hart Lane, Gilzean joined Tottenham in 1964 from Dundee, where he clinched the Scottish league title in 1961/62 and reached the European Champion Clubs’ Cup semi-finals the following season.

The forward, capped 22 times by Scotland, struck 133 goals for Spurs in a ten-year spell, which reached its pinnacle when his side defeated fellow English team Wolverhampton Wanderers in the inaugural UEFA Cup final. Gilzean also won two FA Cups and two English League Cups with Tottenham.

“Everyone at the club is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our legendary former striker Alan Gilzean,” read a statement from Tottenham. “Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this extremely difficult time.”
