New York City FC announced the additions to the coaching staff under head coach Dome Torrent on Friday, and the newcomers all have the pedigree of one of the world’s biggest clubs.
Albert Puig and Jordi Gris have been appointed assistant coaches, while Francesc Cos will be director of performance and Ismael Camenforte will be head of performance. Javier Perez will remain an assistant coach and Rob Vartughian remains goalkeeping coach.
Three former members of the coaching staff left with Patrick Vieira when he took the job at OGC Nice.
Puig joins from California youth club De Anza Force Soccer Club, where he had been technical director since 2016. Before that, Puig was academy director at FC Barcelona from 2010-2014, helping to run the famed La Masia set-up. Puig will be reunited with Torrent at NYCFC, after both men worked at Barcelona.
Gris comes to NYCFC from Indian club Chennai City FC, where he was assistant coach and director of youth football. Previously, Gris worked as a youth scout for FC Barcelona, then worked as an analyst for Pep Guardiola at both Barcelona B and FC Barcelona.
Cos served as Barcelona’s strength and conditioning head from 2004-2016. In addition, he’s a professor at the University of Barcelona, where he obtained his Ph.D in high sport performance.
Camenforte joins NYCFC from Barcelona B, where he was head physical trainer the past six years.
