Gor Mahia 3-0 Bandari: Mapigano inspires K’Ogalo to vital win
The custodian opened the scoring in the first half to help his side to a comfortable win against the visitors
Gor Mahia have moved up to second in the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) after defeating Bandari FC 3-0 on Saturday.
Goalkeeper David Mapigano, Michael Apudo, and Kennedy Otieno struck a goal each to help the team bag a vital win at Afraha Stadium in Nakuru.
The coastal side started on the front foot, pinning the defending champions in their own half. Wycliffe Ochomo and Wilberforce Lugogo had half-chances in the first seven minutes but failed to capitalise on them.
The Dockers were punished in the 10th minute when David Mapigano spotted his opposite number Justin Ndikumana out of position, and the latter could not keep the ball off target.
The FKF Shield defending champions had a good chance to level matters in the 20th minute, but Shaban Kenga could not find the final touch with the goalkeeper well beaten.
Bandari continued creating numerous chances, but poor finishing cost them. The likes of Kenga, Ochomo, Abdalla Hassan and Lugogo could not find a leveller.
K’Ogalo doubled their advantage in the stroke of half-time through an excellent counter-attack which was neatly converted by debutant Michael Apudo to ensure the hosts go into the break with a two-goal advantage.
Ugandan attacker William Wadri and Collins Agade were replaced by Danson Namasaka and Hamisi Mwinyi after an hour mark as caretaker coach Twahir Muhiddin desperately aimed for a comeback.
However, it was the 18-time champions who got a third in the 68th minute courtesy of former Western Stima forward Kennedy Otieno who managed to beat the goalkeeper from close range to seal the win.
The result moved K’Ogalo to 38 points, a point less than leaders Kakamega Homeboyz who beat Kariobangi Sharks 2-1 in another top tier game staged at Kasarani Stadium.
