UNIBEN Royals 1 UNILORIN Warriors 0: Odior Daniel gives hosts first-leg advantage in Benin

A second-half goal from the centre-forward gave Onome Komi’s side a crucial lead in the first leg of the quarter-final fixture

UNIBEN Royals secured a 1-0 victory over UNILORIN Warriors in Wednesday’s quarter-final outing at the Higher Institution Football League.

Odior Daniel’s goal in the 56th minute separated the teams at the University of Benin Sports Centre, as the hosts grabbed a crucial first-leg advantage.

The highly-anticipated encounter started at a low tempo with the Warriors pushing for an early goal but the hosts showed more composure in defence.

Even though the Royals launched some offensive threats in the opening 45 minutes, goalkeeper Ojo Joshua’s brilliance ensured the score was level at half-time.

After the restart, UNIBEN started with more hunger to break the deadlock which later paid off 11 minutes.

Following a fine teamwork by the hosts, Daniel powered his shot past was Ojo to open the scoring in the 56th minute.

The hosts could have doubled their lead in the last 10 minutes but Jeremiah Oden’s header could hit the target.

At the end of the match, Prosper Edewhor was honoured as the Man of the Match for his marshaling display in the middle of the park.

UNILORIN Warriors will be aiming to bounce back from the defeat when they host the Royals for the return fixture in Ilorin next Wednesday.
