Girona coach Michel: LaLiga title NOT our target; Aleix leaving would hurt me

Girona coach Michel is again insisting they’re not in the title race.

Girona resume their LaLiga campaign against Atletico Madrid later tonight.

Michel said: “Regardless of tomorrow’s game, our first round has been spectacular. But it is an important game because we could leave Atlético ten points behind, which is a lot, and continue the start of the year in the best way.

“But it is a great team and it will be complicated. We can do well, I am very confident in showing our best version. If we do it we have a chance of winning the game.

“No (we’re not contender), I think not because we have to score almost 90 points, which is a lot. The first round is just finishing and we have to do a spectacular second. We have to go game by game. Our goal is Europe.

“Madrid, Atlético and Barça are made to win the LaLiga and we are not. We cannot think that our obligation, because we have done something very great until now, is to continue in first position. We must have a great year and we will see if we are able to reach Europe, which is already a very big goal for Girona.”

On Aleix Garcia and Barcelona‘s interest, Michel added: “I have the feeling that Aleix is not going to leave, but whether he goes to one team or another it would hurt me because we would lose him.

“We are not at the level of Barça. We want to continue growing as a club and to do so we need players of Aleix’s level. It would hurt me because we lose potential, but I have the feeling that he is going to continue.”
