Barcelona coach Xavi says he doesn’t want his players getting ahead of themselves in the Champions League.
Barca open their campaign against Royal Antwerp tomorrow night.
Xavi said at his presser today: “The objective is to pass the group. The bar right now is to go step by step. Go to the eighths as group firsts. The first year did not give us a chance to compete, last year it did give us to compete but the results were not given. This season we want to make the jump.”
Xavi also spoke of Anderlecht coach and former Barca teammate Mark van Bommel.
“I have a great memory as a teammate and as an opponent, he was a physically very strong footballer. He was a good teammate and a good friend. He is doing a good job in Antwerp. It is a very dynamic rival, I would highlight the wingers with (Vincent) Janssen as a reference upfront.”
The Barca coach also stated: “Yes, always, I have to demonstrate in every game, this is Barça. We all have extraordinary pressure but it is a challenge and I like challenges. These are challenges that I put on as a coach and as a team. Convince the players and transfer the illusion so that they give the maximum.”
