Xavi defends tactics as Barcelona historic low possession stat for victory at Real Madrid

Barcelona managed victory last night at the Bernabéu, but they did not win their Copa del Rey clash with the ‘Made in Barça’ style.

Barca won the first-leg of their semifinal in Madrid 1-0 thanks to Eder Militao‘s own goal.

Xavi’s team recorded last night the worst percentage of possession in the history of Barça – since such data has been recorded.

The Blaugrana only had the ball at their feet for 35.3% of the time of the match. Data, which is quite far from the average that the Barcelona team is having this season, 63.7%.

Despite this fact, they achieved victory and had three shots on target, while Real Madrid did not manage any, so drying up Carlo Ancelotti‘s team in front of goal.

Asked about the record low stat, Xavi said: “The plan was to have long possession and play in the opposite field. Dominate through the ball… but in front is Madrid. We always want to ‘defend with the ball’, but sometimes you don’t get it. We like to create more. Today was not the game we wanted, what we expected.”
