Athletic Bilbao coach Ernesto Valverde was present at the helm in the last of the seasons in which Barçelona acquired the services of Enriquez Negreira.
He was asked about the scandal in his pre-match press conference.
“I had no idea about all that, it’s a bit surprising for us, well for me, and it will all become clearer. We don’t have all the data, we have to be cautious, let’s see where it all goes. It’s been a surprise for me too,” said Valverde, who urged caution when dealing with the issue.
When asked if he received statistics and reports, he surprised everyone by confessing that he had no knowledge of the referees’ reports:
“I don’t remember reports from the referees, it’s something common: the statistics of the referee that you get for each game… some assessment they make, in the last few games how we’ve done, if they give out more cards, reports that reach Aspiazu (his assistant). At Barcelona I didn’t even look at them, I didn’t even know they existed,” said the ex-Blaugrana coach.
