Genoa striker Destro scores wonder goal – while bizarrely carrying a bottle of water

The Italian frontman netted twice against Verona at the weekend, with his second likely to go down in Serie A’s hall of fame for a few reasons

Genoa striker Mattias Destro scored a wonder goal while bizarrely carrying a bottle of water in the club’s latest domestic fixture against Verona.

The Luigi Ferraris Stadium staged a thrilling encounter between Genoa and Verona on Saturday that ended in a 3-3 draw, with Domenico Criscito scoring a penalty and Destro bagging a brace for the hosts.

Destro’s extraordinary second goal looked to have sealed all three points for Genoa in the 85th minute, but Nikola Kalinic ended up having the final say as he produced a cool finish to secure a draw for the visitors in added time.

Destro’s moment of magic

Destro picked the ball up deep in opposition territory five minutes after heading Genoa level, and proceeded to run towards the box with a water bottle clearly visible in his hand.

The 30-year-old then sold an opposition defender a brilliant dummy to advance into the penalty area before expertly dinking the ball over the goalkeeper, sparking wild scenes of celebration among the home supporters.

What has been said?

Destro explained why he had the bottle in his hand when speaking to reporters post-match, admitting he didn’t know how to dispose of it after stopping for a brief break.

“At the end of the match I was so tired, I was cramping up,” he said. “I was drinking water and didn’t know where to throw the bottle so I decided to just keep it.”

Destro’s record for Genoa

Destro now has four goals to his name from four Serie A appearances this season, which puts him joint third in the competition’s top scorers list.

The Italian frontman has now scored 18 goals in 62 matches across two spells at Genoa, having returned to the club from Bologna in January 2020.
