Barcelona coach Ronald Koeman has explained bringing in Luuk de Jong.
The Sevilla centre-forward signed for Barca on a season-long loan on deadline day.
Koeman said: “I, since the beginning of August, already had contact with Luuk de Jong because from the first day I told the club that I like having a player like him in the squad.
“Knowing the situation, with (Sergio) Agüero injured, Ansu Fati injured, Dembélé injured, Coutinho injured … there were few attackers. We are going to use him and we need this player.
“I told the club and in the last two days of the market the issue of (Antoine) Griezmann was raised … He was a possible signing in a short time time because I have prepared it with him in advance.
“First, it has always surprised me that Barça, even at its best, did not have a player like Luuk in its squad. The kind of player who can change a game, he’s experienced.
“I have spent two years with him in the national team and he showed in many games that he had the level to be with us.”
