LIVE: Chile vs Brazil

51′ Besides the Neymar chance, Brazil’s attempts have been speculative at best – and Paqueta’s latest wayward blast certainly falls into that category. Bravo watches it over the bar.

50′ Vital block from Alex Sandro! Chile mix it up with a long ball from Bravo to Morales, but the play from there is wonderfully intricate. A square pass finds Vidal, who shapes to shoot but instead teases a pass into Aranguiz. The midfielder appears to have space inside the box to finish, only for Alex Sandro to lunge in.

46′ Vargas and Chile get us back up and running for the second half!

Vinícius Júnior

46′ Ribeiro is also on at the break, with Vinicius making way.

Gerson

Bruno Guimarães

Brazil

46′ There are two changes at half-time for Brazil. The first sees a debut for Gerson, replacing Guimaraes, who was on a booking.

Gabriel created the big chance for Neymar, but he has had just 14 touches – the fewest of any Brazil player alongside goalkeeper Weverton. With Richarlison and Gabriel Jesus absent, the number nine would undoubtedly hope to be more involved.

This has been a lively encounter, albeit without a clear-cut chance until Neymar raced through just before the half-hour mark. He blazed over, though, and Chile have since had the bulk of the opportunities, drawing a series of slightly unconvincing if ultimately effective saves from Weverton.

45′ + 3′ HALF-TIME: Chile 0-0 Brazil

Bruno Guimarães

Yellow Card

Brazil

45′ + 2′ Guimaraes earns the first booking of the game for a handball near halfway.

45′ + 1′ Chile are ending the first half on top, as they have been for most of it. There are two added minutes for them to find a breakthrough.

42′ Action at both ends. A sloppy spell in the midfield third comes to an end as Vinicius drives forward and tees up Casemiro, but his shot is straightforward for Bravo. Then Chile attack down the right, only for Vargas to direct his drilled cross straight into the arms of Weverton.

40′ Another save from Weverton! Aranguiz and Vidal are causing real problems for Brazil. They cannot disrupt the former, who knocks the ball wide to Mena, and the latter is a real goal threat, seizing on a pass and creating space to fire in another effort. Weverton just about parries.

37′ This remains a very open game. Chile are pushing for a win they badly need, but that leaves space at the back for Neymar and Co to exploit. The Selecao have not quite clicked just yet.

35′ Chile are piling on the pressure now, desperate for a goal before half-time. But Morales fouls Alex Sandro as the ball drops inside the area, letting Brazil off the hook.

33′ No goal! Chile think they have a smartly constructed opener, but the flag is up and Morales is denied a first international strike! Vidal’s cross is volleyed on by Mena for Morales to prod beyond Weverton, who takes another knock. Mena is clearly offside, though.

30′ Great double save! Weverton is suddenly at the centre of the action! Vidal hammers in a free-kick, which the goalkeeper parries as far as Vargas, who heads goalwards but is also denied. The ball comes back into the box from the right and Weverton fumbles, but Brazil escape and then the keeper goes down for treatment.

30′ Militao is furious. He goes down in an aerial challenge with Vargas, who does not attempt to jump, and is deemed to have fouled his opponent. It gives Chile a free-kick in a presentable position.

27′ The first big chance! Brazil counter through Gabriel, who charges into the Chile half and finds Neymar all alone on the left. He takes his time, running onto the pass and shooting first time, but blazes over from just inside the box with only Bravo to beat.

26′ And better from Isla! He delivers well this time and Guimaraes has to intervene, diverting the cross behind for a corner. Again, Chile work it smartly, but again a shot from the edge of the box is blocked.

25′ This is a slightly better spell for Brazil. Neymar works room for an optimistic effort from outside the box that goes wide of the right-hand post.

24′ Brazil are able to enjoy some possession in the Chile half, pinging the ball around on the left. That tempts a challenge from Vidal, who fouls Alex Sandro. Neymar delivers the free-kick, but the home defence stands tall.

22′ Concern for Chile as Aranguiz requires treatment. He has been at the centre of everything they have done so far. He appears to be okay.

20′ Weverton gives Vargas a little too much credit with this one! The Chile striker is a long way out when he lets fly, with the ball clearing the crossbar by a distance. The Brazil goalkeeper – usually third-choice – still launches into a full-length dive, though.

19′ Chile are winning all the tackles. First, Neymar is surrounded on halfway, allowing the home side to attack. Then, when Vargas gives possession away, Vidal lunges in on Vinicius and gets the ball. The home crowd are enjoying this.

16′ Vidal is the latest Chile player to attempt a speculative shot, which is both wayward and blocked. Brazil attempt to counter – their preferred form of attack so far – but a slack pass gives Chile control once more.

14′ Chile have come back into this after Brazil’s fast start. The hosts have bossed 60 per cent of the possession, with Aranguiz’s 20 touches and 16 passes leading the way.

12′ Again Isla gets in, fed by the influential Aranguiz, but Alex Sandro blocks his latest attempt at a cross. The corner is taken short, working room on the edge of the box for Pulgar’s shot, which is charged down. The home side appeal for handball, but the referee is not interested.

9′ Guimaraes wants a penalty! Chile appeal in vain for offside against Neymar, who cuts inside from the left and feeds Guimaraes in the box. He beats Maripan smartly and is then challenged, with the ball running behind for a corner as the referee waves away calls for a foul. The set-piece sees Paqueta nod over.

7′ Chile need far better end product from Isla. He has got into a crossing position four or five times but is struggling to create anything. A sustained spell of Chile pressure comes to nothing as Vidal is offside on the same right flank.

5′ Chile twice attack down the right and twice fail to break through, fortunate the first time Neymar’s pass cannot then find Gabriel in the box after great work from Guimaraes.

3′ Brazil are not messing around. They’re moving the ball with great urgency early on. Chile, when they finally get a touch, attempt to slow the game a little.

1′ What a start! Gabriel races down the right and squares towards Vinicius, who would have had an open goal had Diaz not hacked clear. Neymar’s subsequent corner is nodded to safety.

1′ Here we go! Visitors Brazil, in their change blue shirts, get us under way through Gabriel.

Vinicius has started 69 games for Real Madrid, but this is the first time he has been named in the XI for Brazil. It is his sixth cap and he is still waiting on a first goal.

Tite had to call up replacements for nine Premier League players unable to travel due to coronavirus restrictions, but he is still able to name an extremely strong side, headlined of course by Neymar. Midfielder Guimaraes earns just his second cap, as does Chile forward Morales.

Subs: Santos, Everson, Dani Alves, Miranda, Lucas Verissimo, Guilherme Arana, Gerson, Edenilson, Everton Ribeiro, Matheus Cunha, Hulk.

Brazil (4-4-2): Weverton; Danilo, Eder Militao, Marquinhos, Alex Sandro; Lucas Paqueta, Casemiro, Bruno Guimaraes, Vinicius Junior; Gabriel Barbosa, Neymar.

Subs: Gabriel Arias, Gabriel Castellon, Enzo Roco, Jean Meneses, Luis Jimenez, Diego Valdes, Nicolas Diaz, Claudio Baeza, Sebastian Vegas, Tomas Alarcon, Carlos Palacios, Marcelino Nunez.

Chile (5-3-2): Claudio Bravo; Mauricio Isla, Guillermo Maripan, Gary Medel, Paulo Diaz, Eugenio Mena; Arturo Vidal, Erick Pulgar, Charles Aranguiz; Ivan Morales, Eduardo Vargas.

Although Brazil have made a fine start, they will be eager to maintain their momentum ahead of a rematch of the Copa America final against rivals Argentina on Sunday.

Tite’s men will put that flawless record on the line against a Chile side badly in need of a result, sitting seventh heading into this round of fixtures – two points behind the play-off place.

Brazil are quickly closing on a place at the finals in Qatar, having won each of their six matches so far in the qualification campaign.
