Explained: Why Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is not wearing glasses

You may have noticed that the Reds manager is now without his trademark square spectacles, and here’s what you need to know about why they’re gone

The sight of Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp and his signature “hipster” glasses has been a familiar one for years, with the German’s choice of spectacles adding to his aura of likeable coolness.

However, fans were given quite a shock over the summer when they noticed their coach had started to forego his glasses, leaving many to wonder if he had got eye surgery or if it was just a fashion choice.

Goal has what you need to know about why Klopp no longer wears glasses, and if they could return in the near future.

Why isn’t Klopp wearing glasses anymore?

In an interview with BILD, Klopp confirmed that he underwent successful eye treatment over the summer – and that it could be the end of his trademark glasses.

“It’s actually totally private, but I can explain it to you once too. I’ve been wearing glasses since I was 10 years old – that’s 44 years,” the German told BILD.

“The problem in recent years was that the glasses could no longer correct my poor eyesight. The solution to this was a minor intervention. It wasn’t lasering or anything, but it made me see very well without glasses at the moment.”

The Liverpool coach did however admit that it will take time to get used to a glasses-free look.

“I think my face is weird without glasses, but I don’t need them anymore. I may need one more. When that happens, I’ll wear glasses again,” he said.

Fans were left surprised during Liverpool’s pre-season games over the summer, when they spotted the manager bare-faced and without his signature specs.

At the time, a source told the Daily Mirror: “He’s had a bit of treatment on his eyes which went really well. It means he doesn’t need to wear his glasses all the time but he still may wear them occasionally in the dugout.”

Did Klopp get Lasik surgery?

Klopp stated that he didn’t get Lasik surgery but instead underwent a smaller proceedure, since he suggested that he might need another “correction”. With Lasik, it is a permanent correctional operation – no further surgeries are needed.

Should he need another small surgery to correct his eyesight, we might be treated to a return of the glasses.

How have Liverpool fans reacted to Klopp not wearing glasses?

Many Liverpool fans were left seemingly distraught that their beloved manager would no longer be sporting his iconic glasses, but some did notice the connection between Liverpool’s two opening victories in the Premier League and Klopp’s new look.
