Jesse Were: Kenya star hits century as Zesco United humble Kitwe United

The forward scored a hat-trick for Timu Ya Ziko in a season he is facing stiff competition for a starting role

Kenya international Jesse Were made history as he scored a hat-trick as Zesco United humbled Kitwe United 4-0 in a Super League fixture at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium on Sunday.

The former Tusker striker scored two goals in the first half and one in the second half to reach 100 goals for the Zambian giants. Winston Kalengo scored the other as Timu Ya Ziko picked up critical points as they charged towards yet another title.

Were scored the opener in the eighth minute with a tap-in as Zesco United established themselves in the game which they dominated throughout.

Thaban Kamusoko almost made it 2-0 with a powerful shot in the 16th minute, but Kitwe United’s Haverson Chingabu denied him with a fine save.

In the 24th minute, Zesco United could have earned another goal but Were could not find the back of the net with a header that flew wide. Rupert Msuonda also missed a chance to extend the lead with a 28th-minute attempt.

At the half-hour mark, Were scored the second to earn his brace in a season that he has not enjoyed regular minutes as a first-teamer.

In the 35th minute, Kalengo attempted to lob the ball over Chingabu, but his shot went over the bar as Kitwe United were fortunate not to concede against a dominant opponent.

But a minute later, Kalengo was not to be denied as he found the back of the net against the backpedalling visitors.

He had a chance for a brace, but the goalkeeper was alert to deny him from scoring from close range four minutes after finding the net.

Zesco United coach Mumba Munamba made a 45th-minute substitution as he replaced Kamusoko with Mwape Mwelwa.

In the 56th minute, Were made history as he scored his hat-trick; the goal took his tally for the Zambian giants to 100.

Two minutes after the hour mark, Were was joined on the pitch by his compatriot and striking partner John Makwatta, who replaced Kalengo.

Makwatta, just like Were, has struggled to find a regular start for Timu ya Ziko who are on the right track to win the Super League title.

The Ndola giants missed the Caf slots last season after surrendering the title to Nkana FC when they finished fifth.
