Gini Wijnaldum’s priority remains to sign a new contract and stay with Liverpool.
The midfielder’s current deal expires in June and is a target for Barcelona coach Ronald Koeman.
But Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano said on Give me Sport: “I have to be honest with you. Speaking with the people around Gini, I was told that he had been respectful towards Liverpool. As before Christmas he spoke with the club, he received a new offer from Liverpool, like the first week of December, to try to extend his contract and it was not an extraordinary offer in Gini’s idea.
“He was expecting something different, but he said ‘OK let’s take some time. I want to talk with my family. I want to make a decision next week, so give me some time to make up my mind and I will not speak with other clubs’.
“If he refuses Liverpool, for sure Barcelona will be one of the options because last summer they pushed for him. Pay attention to Koeman’s situation, because the man who wanted Wijnaldum in Barcelona was Ronald Koeman and is (still) Ronald Koeman. He loves Wijnaldum, he obviously had him with the Dutch national team, but if the new Barcelona president changes the situation and chooses another manager next season, I don’t know if Barcelona will choose Wijnaldum.”
