LIVE: Southampton vs Manchester United

You have to go back almost five years to find the last time Southampton got the better of United, in a 1-0 win in January 2016 thanks to Charlie Austin’s late finish. That being said, nothing could separate the pair last term; they played out two draws.

Subs: Edinson Cavani, Juan Mata, Daniel James, Timothy Fosu-Mensah, Dean Henderson, Brandon Williams, Axel Tuanzebe.

MANCHESTER UNITED (4-3-1-2): David de Gea; Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Victor Lindelof, Harry Maguire, Alex Telles; Fred, Nemanja Matic, Donny van de Beek; Bruno Fernandes; Marcus Rashford, Mason Greenwood.

Subs: Jack Stephens, Shane Long, Michael Obafemi, Nathan Tella, Ibrahima Diallo, Dan N’Lundulu, Fraser Forster.

SOUTHAMPTON (4-4-2): Alex McCarthy; Kyle Walker-Peters, Jan Bednarek, Jannik Vestergaard, Ryan Bertrand; Stuart Armstrong, James Ward-Prowse, Oriol Romeu, Moussa Djenepo; Theo Walcott, Che Adams.

There’s two changes from the United side who succeeded in Europe in midweek, with Mason Greenwood and Nemanja Matic both drafted in, while Donny van de Beek keeps his spot and Anthony Martial misses out entirely. Southampton are unchanged.

Solskjaer knows that every point is precious if he hopes to be able to secure another top four finish this term, but victories over early frontrunners Everton and relegation-threatened West Brom have steadied his ship. There is still work to be done though.

But to make it a trio of domestic wins on the trot, the Red Devils need to overcome Ralph Hasenhuttl – and with a seven-game unbeaten streak under his belt, the Saints boss has transformed his side into a formidable outfit. It’s set to be a tough one.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side look to have rediscovered their mojo following a mixed start to the new term, with a 4-1 rout of Istanbul Basaksehir in the Champions League last time out serving as a reminder of their talent under the Norwegian last term.

Hello and welcome to live coverage of the 2020-21 Premier League, as Manchester United look to make it three top-flight wins on the trot for the first time this season against high-flying Southampton at St Mary’s Stadium.
