Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone is delighted with the arrival of Luis Suarez.
The Uruguayan striker completed his move from Barcelona on Friday afternoon before training with his team-mates for the first time in the evening.
“I’m sure the arrival of Suarez will mean that we keep growing as a club and as a team,” Simeone told the press on Saturday.
“His status will give us internal competition and attacking power.
“Let’s hope he can keep recording those historic numbers that he had at Barcelona.
“We’ve spoken to him in the past, before he went to Barcelona – he chose a different path and had six successful, marvellous and great years.
“We’re very enthusiastic and excited for him to adapt to what we want from him as quickly as possible and that his goals can keep us competing where we’ve always done.”
Suarez arrives at Atletico to replace Alvaro Morata, who has left to return to Juventus on loan.
“Speaking about Suarez… we all know it,” Simeone added.
“He’s a reference.
“He plays a great game and his movement in the box is his strength.
“Facing the chance of Alvaro leaving, the best thing to do to improve was to find someone who scored more goals than him last season.
“When Suarez appeared – it wasn’t easy to find a replacement for Alvaro – the numbers speak for themselves.
“When he had a good [Radamel] Falcao, a good Diego Costa and a good [Antoine] Griezmann, we were closer to competing for everything until the end.
“Let’s hope that, alongside Costa, the growth of Joao [Felix], [Yannick] Carrasco and all the others, we can improve and do better than last season.”
