Miguel Angel Angulo fears Valencia cannot compete for the La Liga title due to the economic disparity with Barcelona and Real Madrid.
Barcelona‘s loss to Osasuna on Thursday allowed Real to claim their first La Liga title in three years. It was Los Blancos’ 34th league title in their history.
Other than Atletico Madrid‘s triumph in 2013/14, one of the two powerhouses of Spanish football have been crowned champions since 2003/04.
The winner that season was Valencia and one of their stars was the talented attacking midfielder in Angulo. It was the second La Liga triumph in three seasons for Los Che, who were lead by esteemed Spanish manager Rafa Benitez.
Part of the reason for the duopoly in Spanish football, says Angulo, is the way television rights money is split between the clubs.
For the 2018/19 season, according to Forbes, champions Barcelona were awarded 166.5 million euros, while Real Madrid took home 155.3 million euros.
And with fourth-placed Valencia taking home 78.7 million euros, Valencia great and current youth coach Angulo fears it will be impossible for the club to return to their success of the early 2000’s.
He told Tribalfootball: “I believe, at the moment, Barcelona and Real Madrid are at a really important level.
‘I believe that Valencia CF and Atlético Madrid are near them and Sevilla too. However, one has to be sincere. In this day and age, regarding the budget for each club and the way the money from Television rights in Spain is shared amongst the clubs in La Liga…Real Madrid and Barcelona get a bigger share of the money.
“This means that they can buy the most expensive players on the market…meaning that teams like Sevilla, Villarreal and Valencia cannot aspire to get these players. I believe that one of the reasons that they cannot compete with the top two teams is do with the question of money.”
