Barcelona presidential candidate Victor Font has sent a warning to incumbent Josep Maria Bartomeu about the direction the club is heading in.
Font demanded explanations from the club regarding the true economic situation at the Camp Nou.
“We are heading towards a perfect storm,” Font wrote in an open letter.
“They must replace the best generation of players in the club’s history, build and finance Espai Barca and compete against companies with almost unlimited financial resources.
“They have to do all of this while preserving the ownership of the club in the hands of the members, and their competitive capacity in football and all other sections.”
Font continued in his letter to explain how the threats facing the club had multiplied in the current climate.
“If the risks were great, they’re now gigantic,” Font said.
“We’re in the midst of a pandemic that has paralysed the planet and will also have effects that we cannot foresee today.
“For months we’ve seen shameful escalation of incidents in the club’s institutional behaviour, culminating in recent days with serious accusations made among management and six abrupt resignations.”
In the lengthy statement, Font concluded with three demands.
“1. Explain with total transparency the economic situation at the club, as well as the total debt and to what extent this restricts the short-term plan.
“2. Delay making non-essential structural decisions, since we don’t know for sure what the coronavirus’ impact will be on the club. It’s vital to postpone the decision on Espai Barca until a new board is elected.
“3. Offer the maximum transparency when carrying out operations – signings and sales – with players.”
