The PSL chairman has confirmed the suspension of the league campaign due to the coronavirus
Following the decision to suspend the Premier Soccer League games on Monday due to the coronavirus, a decision that was announced by chairman Irvin Khoza, there was another press briefing on Thursday afternoon.
Khoza also announced on Monday that the PSL‘s Board of Governors (BOG) were set to meet on Thursday morning followed by a media briefing in Kempton Park in the afternoon.
The ‘Iron Duke’ was set to map up the way forward for the league as far as the continuation of the league matches amidst the coronavirus outbreak.
“We will complete the season by no later than June 30, but we shall remain flexible,” Khoza told the media on Thursday.
Just as the football fraternity was anticipating a mouth-watering clash between Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns on Tuesday night, Khoza revealed the matches would not continue until a meeting on Thursday where a formal decision would be made in consultation with all the member clubs.
Meanwhile, there was another announcement by Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Nathi Mthethwa on Tuesday, he ordered the league and the South African Football Association (Safa) to go on with the games but behind closed doors.
However, Safa boss Danny Jordaan held a media briefing on Wednesday afternoon where the games were put on hold until April 04, saying playing behind closed doors would be an ill-timed move.
Taking a look at the log table, log leaders Kaizer Chiefs saw their match against Bidvest Wits on Wednesday night as coach Ernst Middendorp’s men sit at the summit with 48 points from 22 games, they were looking to stretch their lead against the Clever Boys.
