45′ + 3′ HALF-TIME: SOUTHAMPTON 1-0 TOTTENHAM
45′ + 2′ Good chance! Excellent move by Southampton, quick passing and they work the ball well into the final third. Redmond whips a lovely ball into the box from the left wing, it’s met by Armstrong at the near post, but his header is straight at Gazzaniga, who makes a comfortable save.
45′ There will be a minimum of three minutes added time played here.
43′ Southampton and Tottenham have faced on New Year’s Day once before in the Premier League, Saints winning 1-0 in 2003 thanks to a James Beattie strike.
41′ Another stoppage now as Djenepo goes down and requires some medical treatment from the Saints phsyio. However, it looks like he will be fine to continue.
40′ HUGE CHANCE! Vertonghen with a great opportunity at the back post to make it 1-1! Eriksen delivers a corner into the box and it falls to the centre-back at the back post, but he can’t sort his feet out quickly enough and his shot flies high over the crossbar from just a couple of yards out.
39′ No penalty! Even Alli can’t believe that there has been a VAR check on the McCarthy save, nothing is given and Spurs will resume play with a corner.
38′ CHANCE! Kane drills a low shot towards goal from the edge of the penalty area, which McCarthy spills and Alli tries to get onto the rebound, but McCarthy just gets to the ball first, diving at the feet of the midfielder. It’s a Spurs corner, but we are going to have a VAR check, just to see if Alli or McCarthy got to the ball first.
36′ The first yellow card of the game is shown to Lo Celso, after he tries to get the referee to show a yellow card to a Saints player after a foul.
36′ Free-kick to Tottenham in a decent position to try and get the ball into the penalty area. Eriksen chips it into the box, looking for Kane in-behind, but he just can’t quite reach it and was flagged offside anyway.
34′ When Tottenham are on the ball in the Saints half, the hosts are getting everyone back behind the ball, making it difficult for Spurs to break them down.
32′ CHANCE! Armstrong does brilliantly down the right wing and gets to the byline, he drills a low cross into the six yard box, with Redmond meets at the near post and sends the ball towards goal. However, Alderweireld is there to block it. Excellent defending by the Spurs man.
31′ We’re past the half an hour mark now at St Mary’s and it’s still Southampton who lead and look good value for that. Spurs just haven’t got going and don’t look assured at the back.
29′ The pace of the game has dropped in the last few minutes, with Southampton just happy to keep the ball in midfield and frustrate Tottenham, who just can’t seem to get the likes of Kane and Moura involved at the moment.
27′ Tottenham haven’t really got going so far today, the hosts look much more up for the game and look comfortable with their 1-0 lead.
25′ Here is the Tottenham substitution, with NDombele coming off and he has been replaced by Lo Celso.
24′ It doesn’t look good for Ndombele, he’s gone down in the Spurs half of the pitch and it doesn’t look like he is going to be able to continue. Lo Celso is getting ready on the sidelines.
23′ Only Jamie Vardy (17) has scored more Premier League goals this season than Southampton’s Ings (13), who has also scored in a joint-league high 12 different Premier League games this season (with Vardy)
21′ Decent effort! Tottenham win a free-kick around 30 yards out and Eriksen steps up to take it. However, his effort flies straight into the Saints wall and out for a corner. The resulting set piece comes to nothing.
19′ Both teams have had chances to open the scoring in the opening minutes, but Southampton now have the advantage. It wil be interesting to see how quickly Tottenham respond.
17′ It was a lovely chipped ball up from the back by Stephens, who got in-behind the Spurs defence and then produced a lovely turn and finish.
17′ GOOOAAALLL! Ings opens the scoring and Southampton lead 1-0! The striker produces a wonderful flick over Alderweireld, sending the defender the wrong way and Ings then volleys the ball into the bottom right-hand corner of the net, giving Gazzaniga no chance, who was rooted to the spot.
16′ The game isn’t flowing at the moment, with possession switching between the teams as they both make a few sloppy passes and cheap fouls.
14′ Good save! McCarthy is once again called into action, this time to deny Kane after a good cross into the box from Eriksen, but the Saints keeper gets down and makes the save.
13′ CHANCE! Redmond with a wonderful chance to put Saints ahead here, he twists and turns away from Alderweireld and then fires a low shot towards the Spurs goal, but it’s too close to Gazzaniga, who makes a smart save, but Armstrong almost gets to the rebound, so Alderweireld has to react quickly and turn it behind, out of play.
11′ PENALTY SHOUT! Alli goes down in the box after shifting the ball away from Stephens and the centre-back just leaves a leg there and Alli appeals to the referee, claiming that there was a touch from the Saints defender. However, nothing is given by the referee and VAR agree.
10′ Southampton won this exact fixture 2-1 last season, ending a run of six consecutive home league games without a win against Spurs (D2 L4).
8′ Brief stoppage in play now after Djenepo and Ndombele clash knees, as the Saints man tries to tackle Ndombele in midfield. However, both are fine to continue and don’t require any medical treatment.
7′ There is a cracking atmopshere here inside St Mary’s, with Tottenham supporters well backed in the away end and the Saints fan in a good mood, following their three game unbeaten streak in the league.
5′ SAVE! McCarthy is called into action to deny Kane from the edge of the penalty area! The striker tries to work space for the shot, but he’s initially denied by the Saints defence, however, the rebounds falls straight to him and Kane fires an effort from 20 yards out, which takes a deflection and the Saints keeper has to push it around the post.
4′ Good start here by Southampton, they are keeping the ball well in midfield and getting forward in number early on. Tottenham yet to really get into their rhythm.
2′ CHANCE! Good opportunity for Southampton after just two minutes! Bertrand whips a lovely deep cross into the penalty area and Cedric meets it unmarked at the far post, after Moura fails to track him back. However, the right-backs header flies just wide of the Spurs goal.
1′ We’re underway!
