Liverpool midfielder Gini Wijnaldum has recalled their amazing Champions League comeback against Barcelona last season.
Down 3-0 from the first-leg, Liverpool won the semifinal 4-3 on aggregate to reach the final where they defeated Tottenham in Madrid.
On the semifinal second-leg at Anfield, Wijnaldum told AD: “I went home afterwards and sat down on the couch next to my girlfriend. There I thought: wow, let this feeling last for a while, don’t let it disappear.
“Quincy Promes called and you can feel how other people experienced it at home in front of the television. It was probably indeed the match of 2019. And the match that people will talk about in many years to come.
“I remember well at Camp Nou afterwards in the dressing room next to Sadio Mané. He said, ‘Gini, do you think we will reach the final still?’. I immediately said ‘yes’.
“The manager (Jürgen Klopp ) Immediately predicted a historic comeback. He said: ‘Just like we played here in Camp Nou, nobody plays here like that at all. Next week at Anfield it will be a completely different story’.
“And he was right.
“That evening it seemed like I was dreaming. I couldn’t sleep after that match and I didn’t want to sleep either. When I went to Liverpool at the time, we wanted to take the club where, according to many, it should be. We succeeded in winning these titles.”
He added: “I really wanted to win the Champions League once. Now that that it has happened, I want that more often. Take Real Madrid: they won the prize three times in a row. Beautiful right? We have seen what it did for this city. With the people who love this club. I think that is addictive.”
