Lionel Messi proved the matchwinner as Barcelona won 1-0 at Atletico Madrid on Sunday night.
Messi earned Barcelona a dramatic victory over Atletico in Antoine Griezmann‘s return to the Estadio Wanda Metropolitano on a rainy Sunday night in Madrid.
It was a typically intense 90 minutes of football between two of Spain’s giants, with the home side having two golden chances in the first half, but they were unable to find a way past Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen.
While Griezmann was a non-factor in front of the Wanda Metropolitano, who jeered and whistled their former French striker every time he touched the ball, Messi, as he so often does, came to the rescue and fired in an 86th minute rocket to earn the Catalan side all three points.
Messi’s goal on 86 minutes and the victory sets up the Argentine for Monday’s Ballon d’Or gala where he is favourite.
