Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) president Luis Rubiales insists Robert Moreno was told first of Luis Enrique‘s return as Spain coach.
Luis Enrique has returned to take charge of La Roja for Euro2020, which was confirmed on Tuesday.
A meeting was scheduled for Tuesday morning between Moreno, Rubiales and Spain sporting director Jose Francisco Molina, following the news last night that Moreno would no longer continue as La Roja boss, but Luis Enrique‘s former assistant coach instead just sent his lawyers to Las Rozas.
“Molina closed a meeting with Moreno[‘s representatives] at 10 o’clock [CET] on Tuesday,” Rubiales told the press conference.
“The first to know that Luis Enrique wanted to come back was Moreno.
“We have always acted rigorously and kept our word.
“We haven’t changed our message and we’re loyal to everyone.
“Luis Enrique had to leave his post because of the worst thing that can happen [to a person].
“This is a project that will finish in Qatar.”
Rubiales also confirmed that Luis Enrique will return with a contract until 2022.
“We were comfortable with Robert’s work, but we had a moral obligation that if our leader, who is Luis Enrique, wanted to come back, we couldn’t say no,” Rubiales stated.
“He wants the cycle to close at the [2022] World Cup in Qatar.
“He deserves it, regardless of what happens at the Euros.
“We haven’t talked about the contract at the moment.”
Robert Moreno seems unwilling to return to his role as Luis Enrique‘s No.2, which Rubiales respects.
“Luis Enrique has asked me if he can be the one to answer questions regarding the technical staff,” Rubiales added.
“Will [Moreno] stay in the Federation? He has requested to depart and settle his contract.
“I’m proud of how we acted.
“We would have liked to talk to him. It makes sense that he sent his lawyers [to Tuesday morning’s meeting], who are usually the ones who discuss these issues.”
