Wazito FC 2:4 Kakamega Homeboy: Ambani’s charges suffer season’s heaviest defeat

The ambitious Nairobi-based side have now lost two of their six games into the current Kenyan Premier League season

Wazito FC suffered their second Kenyan Premier League (KPL) loss this season after falling 4-2 to Kakamega Homeboyz.

Peter Thiongo scored a brace while Kennedy Onyango and Allan Wanga scored a goal apiece for the visitors. The hosts scored their goals courtesy of Johnstone Omurwa.

The hosts started the match brightly, trying to unsettle the visitors by getting an early goal. Musa Masika managed to find Derrick Onyango in the danger zone but the striker’s shot sailed over the crossbar.

Homeboyz recorded their first shot on target in the fifth minute when Etyang Stephen received the ball just outside the 18-yard area but Steve Njunge was equal to the task.

Benjamin Oketch conceded a foul about 40-yards from the visitors’ goal and Abouba Sibomana fired the ball goalwards but Victor Ndinya could not direct his header on target.

As the match went on, the Nicholas Muyoti-led charges gained momentum, attacking with every chance they got. However, crosses from Etyang and Thiongo were dealt with by the hawk-eyed defenders.

Wazito conceded a foul in the 35th minute through Bernard Ochieng who fouled Chris Masinza. Towering defender Onyango rose highest to head the ball in the back of the net.

Moments later, Thiongo beat his marker before unleashing a low drive which beat Njunge in the Wazito goal to double the advantage for the visitors.

Homeboyz got their third a few minutes to the break when Etyang’s cross found the unmarked Thiongo in the 12-yard area and the forward made no mistake.

After the break, Wazito came back stronger but it was Homeboyz who had a real chance in the 48th minute when the defender lost the ball to Etyang. The latter passed it to Thiong’o who picked the surging Masinza. However, the winger’s shot flew over the bar.

The missed chance came back to haunt the visitors as Johnstone Omurwa reduced the deficit in the 55th minute. The defender made a good run before unleashing a rocket from about 40-yards and into the back of the net.

Substitute Elvis Rupia was denied by the crossbar in the 63rd minute with the goalkeeper well beaten. The rebound was comfortably cleared by the defenders.

Defensive lapses by Wazito in the 70th minute allowed veteran striker Allan Wanga into the 18-yard box. The former AFC Leopards forward rounded the goalkeeper before bursting the net for Kakamega’s fourth.

Omurwa was on target again for the KPL newcomers when he pounced on a loose ball in the box, but it was too little too late for Fred Ambani’s charges.
