Guinea 1-0 Liberia: Syli Nationale secure final berth in Wafu Cup of Nations plate

The Syli Nationale saw off Liberia’s challenge to book their place in the final of the regional competition in Senegal

Guinea have qualified for the final of the West African Football Union Cup of Nations plate competition after edging Liberia 1-0 in Thies.

Daouda Camara’s first-half goal was enough to guide Mouhamed Bangoura’s men to the final of the regional tournament.

Both teams started Wednesday’s fixture on a promising note as they attempted to draw first blood in the opening minutes.

Terry Sackor had the earliest chance at goal for Liberia in the 18th minute but failed to place his effort at goal.

On the other end, Camara nearly put Guinea ahead but his left-footed shot drifted away from goal.

The deadlock at the Stade Lat-Dior was finally broken when Camara placed his shot past Alpha Jalloh in the 40th minute.

After a fine team movement, a beautiful back-heel pass from Mamadouba Bangoura set up Camara for the opener as the Syli Nationale went into the interval with a goal lead.

Following the restart of the encounter, coach Robert Lartey made a double substitution with captain Sackor and Wurie Barry coming off for Rufus Padmore and Mark Karlay, respectively.

Liberia’s push for an equaliser was intensified when Mark Yallah replaced Theo Nimely in the 62nd minute.

Thirteen minutes later, Daniel Paye made a goal-line clearance to prevent Bangoura from doubling Guinea’s lead after Morlaye Sylla beat off an on-rushing Jalloh from his goal.

The Lone Stars’ clearest chance in the second 45 minutes came when Benjamin Doe swung in a cross into the penalty area but Varney Dukuly could not beat Sekouba Camara with his header in the 77th minute.

Guinea will lock horns against Cape Verde in the final of the plate competition on Saturday.
