Premier League winners and losers – week five

Sportsbet’s Ed Wyatt talks up the positives and negatives from another round of English top-flight action

Winners

Farke Yeah, Norwich!:  A stunning 3-2 win for the Canaries over Manchester City and it wasn’t on a fluky own goal or a controversial penalty. Daniel Farke’s men pressured the reigning champs and forced them into errors, including a howler from Nicolas Otamendi. Man of the hour Teemu Pukki scored again and assisted on another.

Liverpool:  Yes, they beat Newcastle 3-1 but more importantly, Manchester City’s loss means the Reds are now five points clear at the top.

Tammy Abraham:  The 21-year old became the youngest Chelsea player to score a Premier League hat trick in his side’s 5-2 smashing of Wolves. Abraham has seven for the season, and is joint-top scorer with Sergio Aguero.

Quique Sanchez Flores:  How does the ‘new manager bounce’ work when the new manager is an old manager? Apparently quite well still, with Watford earning a 2-2 draw against Arsenal in Flores’ return to Vicarage Road where he was in charge four years ago.

Callum Wilson:  Scored a brace, including a magnificent chip of Jordan Pickford as Bournemouth won its first home match of the season, 3-1 over Everton.

Losers

Otamendi and Sokratis:  Both defenders coughed the ball up in their own end, leading to crucial goals. Sokratis even went so far as to offer an apology.

Palace against Son Heung-Min:  Son was tremendous in Spurs’ comprehensive 4-0 win – something that shouldn’t have surprised Palace fans.

Jury’s Out

Wolves’ season:  Everyone’s favourite ‘break into the top six’ candidates are currently languishing in 19th place and have yet to win in the league this season.

Manchester United‘s penalties:  Marcus Rashford’s converted penalty was the difference in United’s 1-0 win over Leicester, but let’s give it a little more time before we call the problem solved.

Everton’s top six aspirations:  Probably too early to call it a crisis but the Toffees looked lethargic in a 3-1 loss to Bournemouth, with boss Marco Silva calling all three goals “preventable.”
