That’s all from us as Atletico and Juventus share the spoils in their Champions League opener. Goodbye for now!
The picture in Group D looks like this: Lokomotiv Moscow go top after a surprise win over Bayer Leverkusen, with Juventus and Atletico second and third with a point apiece. For now, it’s a return to league action on the weekend – Atletico hosting Celta Vigo and Juventus up against Verona.
Simeone will be the happier of the two managers seeing his side come back from two goals down, but a disaster for Juventus as they give up their lead! Cuadrado put them ahead three minutes after the break with a brilliant strike and Matuidi made it two with a header – both goals on the break – but the Atletico fightback began just five minutes after going two down. Two set pieces and two goals – Savic with the first and Herrera with the second in the final minute of normal time! What a second half that was!
90′ + 5′ FULL-TIME: ATLETICO MADRID 2-2 JUVENTUS.
90′ + 5′ SO CLOSE! In classic style, Ronaldo bursts into the box, beating Savic with a couple of stepovers, but his shot uncharacteristically lacks enough curl and it goes inches wide! What an ending that would have been!
90′ + 2′ We’re into five minutes of added time, but can Atletico hold on? They definitely deserve to be level, but how have Juventus given up a 2-0 lead?! Sarri will be furious.
90′ Trippier’s attempted eleven crosses this game and he finally delivers with a great corner!
90′ GOAAAAAAL! HERRERA EQUALISES! Atletico have been a threat from set pieces all game and they finally reap the rewards! Both Herrera and Gimenez attack the ball, but it’s Herrera that gets the final touch!
89′ This is wonderful from Felix! He uses a neat touch and a turn of pace to get past Bentancur, but the substitute tracks back and makes a tackle to stop the danger.
87′ Pjanic has kept possession ticking over nicely all game, but he’s taken off for Ramsey. The free transfer is making his Juventus debut!
85′ Herrera spreads play wide to Vitolo, who cuts inside looking for an opening. He manages to find Trippier on the right, but Matuidi heads his cross away.
83′ Costa is shown a yellow card for protesting just a little too much, in typical Costa fashion.
83′ HANDBALL?! Correa pushes his way through to the byline for a cross and it seems to hit Bonucci on the arm! The referee isn’t having any of it though and waves away the protests!
82′ SZCZESNY SAVES! Vitolo batters his way past the Juventus defence and curls a right-footed shot towards goal and it forces Szczesny to tip it over the bar!
81′ Dybala is involved quickly, trying to pick out a team-mate with a cutback, but Gimenez gets to it first and clears.
80′ Higuain was a focal point, but he didn’t hugely contribute to the game, so he makes way for Dybala. This could prompt a tactical change, with Ronaldo moving into the middle.
78′ Ronaldo is still searching for a goal today and nearly gets to the front of the queue for a whipped Cuadrado cross, but Oblak is quick to react and beats him there.
76′ Partey missed out on the weekend through injury and seems to be struggling with cramp today. He makes way for Herrera.
75′ The referee halts play as Thomas is down with an injury, requiring attention from the physios.
74′ DOUBLE SAVE FOR OBLAK! Bentancur with a lovely pass to Higuain and Oblak saves, but only as far as Matuidi. He’s got time, but opts to shoot quickly and Oblak is up again just as fast to deny him! Great goalkeeping!
71′ It’s a goal and a yellow card for Cuadrado – he’s let his temper get the better of him in a clash with Lodi.
70′ He’s been a threat in the air all game from set pieces and Gimenez delivers with this one, heading across goal to Savic.
70′ GOAL! ATLETICO PULL ONE BACK! We’ve got a game on here! It’s one centre-back to another as Gimenez heads a set piece back across goal and Savic turns it in from close range. Can they get another?!
69′ It’s about control now that Juventus are up by two and, to that end, Bentancur comes on for Khedira.
67′ Whatever Sarri said at half-time has worked a treat! Juventus have much more bite about their performance in the second half and they’ve picked off Atletico twice now with rapid counters.
65′ Sandro picks out Matuidi expertly with a fine cross, but Ronaldo was key in the build-up to this with a wonderful sweeping pass out into the flanks.
65′ GOAL! IT’S 2-0!! Juventus catch Atletico on the break again! Matuidi gets the finishing touch – heading powerfully past Oblak from inside the six-yard box – but it’s a lovely team goal.
64′ The referee’s taken a knock here! A wayward Khedira pass hits him smack in the face from close range – that’s going to hurt in the morning! He’s okay though.
62′ The tempo’s just rising a little bit, Correa playing a role in this with his new energy on the frontline. He’s busy harrying defenders and pressing high, something we didn’t see much of from Atletico in the first half.
60′ Lemar is the first to make way, coming off for Correa. It’s not been the best performance from the Frenchman.
60′ CHANCE! That’s a decent opportunity for Gimenez! He gets on the end of a Koke cutback, but blazes it over the bar!
60′ Trippier has another chance to deliver a corner, and Gimenez leaps to get his head to it, but Danilo – back on after his injury – gets it away.
59′ Danilo has a problem that means the physios have to come on – play’s halted and we might see the first change of the game. He’s back on the for the moment, though.
58′ Costa has a chance to lead a counter, but Ronaldo trips him and gives away a free-kick. Very cynical from the Portuguese!
57′ They’re on the front foot for the moment, though, working the ball around midfield trying to find an opening. Here’s Cuadrado inside to Higuain, who helps it on to Ronaldo on the left, but he cuts inside and runs into traffic.
56′ We might see a different dynamic to this game now that Juventus are ahead. Atletico are chasing, they’re going to have come out of their defensive shell a little more, which means Juventus might get more space on the break.
54′ Here’s Cuadrado again bursting into space on the right. He creates an opening for Danilo, but the right-back doesn’t get his head up to see Ronaldo unmarked at the back post. He takes the shot instead and it’s saved.
52′ They’re behind at the minute, but Atletico actually have a good record against Italian sides in the Champions League. They’ve lost just one of their eight games against Italian clubs, but this defeat did come against Juventus – they lost 3-0 in their last Champions League match back in March.
50′ Everyone expects Ronaldo to deliver in these situations, but who steps up when the Portuguese doesn’t? Cuadrado apparently, with a Ronaldo-esque goal of his own!
48′ Higuan finally gets involved and picks out Cuadrado with a pass across the box. It’s a good spot from the striker.
48′ GOAAAL! JUVENTUS LEAD! What a strike from Cuadrado! He cuts in on his left, confuses his marker with a stepover and unleashes a left-footed rocket into the corner! Oblak doesn’t move!
47′ Saul nicks the ball of Pjanic and finds a path into the box, but his cross is blocked.
47′ There’s plenty to choose from on the Juventus bench today, the likes of Rabiot, Ramsey and Dybala. And with Higuain absent in the first half, it might only be a matter of time until the more versatile Dybala gets on.
46′ We’re back underway between Atletico and Juventus, but will there be any goals?
Sarri will not be happy inside the Juventus dressing room. He’s seen his side have just over half of possession, but find the target just twice, both times Oblak easily able to collect the ball. Ronaldo’s largely been a passenger – save a tame header in the 40th minute – but he needs only a sniff to find the net, something Atletico of all teams don’t need to be reminded about.
Not a first half for the ages this, but Atletico have been the better side, finding the target four times. They should rightfully be disappointed not to have taken advantage of the opportunities, particularly Felix on the break in the 11th minute. He’s done well against a tough centre-back pairing of Bonucci and De Ligt, but there’s another level to his game and Atletico will hope he finds it.
45′ + 1′ HALF-TIME: ATLETICO MADRID 0-0 JUVENTUS.
44′ As you probably know, Ronaldo’s scored the most goals ever in the Champions League. But to really contextualise this, he’s scored 126 times (excluding qualifiers) and found the net in over half of his 162 appearances in the competition – that’s 82 different games, another record.
42′ Ronaldo’s looked alone and isolated out on the right so far, so it’s no surprise really to see him move into a more central position alongside Higuain. He wants his goals, clearly!
40′ Cuadrado with a better ball this time finds Ronaldo at the back post, but his header’s into Oblak’s hands once again. No danger posed by the competition’s all-time top scorer at the moment.
38′ It’s not just Trippier getting space and time to cross, but Lodi too on the left. He’s charging forward given the opportunity, but his latest attempt evades everyone and Bonucci lets it roll out for a goal-kick. Confidently too, it’s worth adding – he didn’t even have to look!
36′ Pjanic plays it short to create a better angle and Cuadrado whips in a cross to the back post. He’s looking for Bonucci, but he’s marked out of play and Atletico get the goal-kick.
36′ Juventus resorting to long shots from outside the box now and Pjanic tries his luck! It’s a well-hit effort that takes a deflection off Gimenez and goes out for a corner.
34′ Quite a slow game this, but it’s Atletico with the best of it so far. They’ve had two efforts on target, compared with none from the visitors.
32′ The tides are turning and it’s Atletico enjoying long spells of possession. Can they make something of this one though? No they can’t, Koke’s attempted cross going straight out of play.
31′ Ronaldo isn’t known for tracking back, but it means Trippier is getting loads of space down that right flank! He’s attempted six crosses already and one of them is bound to find its target eventually. Juventus leave him free at their own peril.
29′ Atletico putting the pressure on! Felix comes close with another chance – nice interplay with Lodi setting it up at the near post – but he can’t get enough power on his effort.
27′ A reminder that this is Atletico’s first Champions League season without Antoine Griezmann since 2013-14! Will new arrival Felix be able to shoulder the burden? For context, Griezmann scored or assisted 54 percent of Atletico’s goals in the competition (19 goals, seven assists) between September 2015 and March 2019.
25′ Trippier with a corner for Atletico – high into the centre of the box – and it goes behind for another attempt. It’s short this time to Lemar, back to Trippier with a one-two and he crosses to the back post, but no one’s there!
23′ Not the opening Juventus would have wanted and Ronaldo gets fed up, trying to make something out of nothing with a typical long ranger, but Oblak takes the sting out of it and drops on the ball.
22′ Classic Costa! One of the biggest and strongest players on the pitch, but he goes down under a challenge from Pjanic. He wins a free-kick though and it’s some welcome respite for Atletico.
21′ Ronaldo pops up on the right looking to find a team-mate in the box, but he’s double marked and tackled, Saul getting the ball away.
20′ Juventus come forward again, Matuidi set free on the left flank. He tries to pick out Cuadrado at the far post, but it’s a poor effort that goes straight into Oblak’s outstretched arms.
19′ It’s been a rather cautious opening to this match – Atletico refusing to give up too much space in behind for Ronaldo and Cuadrado, so they’re set quite deep and looking to play on the break. But Juventus have been sterile in possession so far. A goalless draw on the cards, perhaps?
17′ Thomas picks out Trippier with an excellent long pass, but he’s beaten by the ball and gets his touch all wrong as it rolls out for a throw.
15′ Matuidi is the first to go into the book. He’s shown a yellow card as his trailing arm catches Koke in the face.
14′ Felix has another chance to open the scoring, this time a header from a Trippier cross. But it’s a tough ask – it’s a bit of a floater that cross with no pace on the ball, so Felix has to generate all the power himself. It’s easy for Szczesny to catch.
12′ Atletico could have gone ahead from the corner that followed, but Gimenez – unmarked in the middle of the box – heads over the bar!
11′ SAVE! Felix on the break has no support and he’s forced to go at it alone, running against five Juventus defenders. He manages to get a right-footed shot away and it forces Szczesny to drop down to his left and make the save!
10′ It’s been all Juventus in the opening 10 minutes – they’ve had 64 percent of the ball, but they haven’t found a way through to Oblak as of yet.
9′ Ronaldo passes wide to Danilo, into Cuadrado now drifting towards the edge of the box, but the Colombian can’t hold onto the ball and the move ends with him.
7′ Ronaldo gets on the ball for the first time in the game and he’s greeted with a loud chorus of boos! Nothing less than you’d expect for a man that’s caused Atletico such misery over the years.
5′ Felix creates some space for a cross and he fires one towards Costa, but Bonucci again heads it clear and he doesn’t half catch one from the Atletico striker during the clash!
4′ Trippier with another chance to deliver a cross, but Bonucci gets his head to it first.
3′ Atletico now with a chance to hold onto the ball for a while, Saul spreading it wide to Trippier, but Juventus clear.
1′ As you’d expect, Juventus on the front foot early on and they’ve won a corner. Pjanic with the delivery, but Costa at the near post gets it away.
1′ A new Champions League campaign kicks off at the Wanda Metropolitano! Juventus get us underway.
Stay with us because the teams are out and kick-off is on the way!
Atletico perhaps hoped they’d seen the back of Ronaldo when he left Real Madrid, but he scored a hat-trick against them last season and is back again today with a record to maintain. He’s scored 25 goals against Atletico in his career, the second-most against any side! Only Sevilla have had it worse.
Diego Simeone makes one change from the side that lost to Real Sociedad, Vitolo missing out for the defensively-minded Thomas – a switch that makes sense against a possession-orientated Sarri team. Meanwhile, just the one change for Juventus too, Cuadrado coming in for Douglas Costa, who was injured in the 0-0 draw with Fiorentina on the weekend.

New Juventus manager Maurizio Sarri has his first trophy under his belt, winning last season’s Europa League with Chelsea. Can he go one better and win Europe’s biggest prize? He’d be joining illustrious company if he does – only Rafael Benitez, Jose Mourinho and Bob Paisley have won both in consecutive seasons.
Juventus knocked Atletico out of the 2018-19 Champions League in the last-16 – a Cristiano Ronaldo second-leg hat-trick overturning a 2-0 defeat. But the Old Lady only went a round further, losing 3-2 to Ajax in the quarter-final. Both teams will harbour ambitions to win the tournament this season, Juventus the most recent of the pair to reach the final in 2017.
Hello and welcome to our live coverage of the Champions League Group D opener between Atletico Madrid and Juventus.
