The 26-year-old defender has made a big impact in the Red Devils’ defence, but one former Old Trafford star is not convinced by him
Manchester United legend Roy Keane says he still has concerns over Harry Maguire’s defensive ability.
The England centre-back joined the Red Devils in a move worth £80 million ($96m), seeing him replace Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk as the game’s most expensive defender.
The 26-year-old has already made four Premier League appearances for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side and has been the subject of a lot of praise due to his performances.
Solskjaer has been pleased with the new signing’s impact on the team, while fellow United star Paul Pogba hailed him as a “beast” after his first game for the Old Trafford outfit and Lee Grant and Diogo Dalot have been impressed by how quickly he has settled in.
Meanwhile, Barcelona defender and former United player Gerard Pique described him as a “great” defender and believes he can help his new side compete for the Premier League title for the first time since 2013, and he has been tipped to become a future club captain by Gary Pallister.
But club icon Keane is not so sure about Maguire’s strengths, as he believes he looks vulnerable as a defender sometimes.
“I think he’s done OK,” Keane told ITV.
“We were talking about how good he is on the ball, but defensively I still think he’s… I still have one or two question marks over him.
“I always worry about his pace on the turn, I remember the first goal against Crystal Palace where he’s not doing the basics – covering round his other centre-half.
“Listen he’s 26 years of age now, you’re worried if you’re pointing these things out to him.”
But Keane’s opinion is not shared by another legendary figure in English football, as ex-Arsenal star Ian Wright is convinced Maguire is worth the money United paid for him.
“He’s a good footballer, he’s a very good footballer,” the former striker said.
“He’s gone up the leagues, he’s got better. Now he’s got to Man Utd and it’s the pinnacle really.
“They’ve paid that money for him because he’s worth the money.”
