Mamelodi Sundowns 1-1 Cape Town City: Citizens fight back to hold PSL champions

Hlompho Kekana opened the scoring for the Brazilians, but Edmilson Dove levelled matters for the Citizens

Mamelodi Sundowns were held to a 1-1 stalemate by Cape Town City in a PSL match which was played in Tshwane on Tuesday night.

Pitso Mosimane made only one change from the starting line-up which took on Bloemfontein Celtic in the MTN8 quarter-final match on Saturday evening.

Lyle Lakay started against his former side in the absence of Tebogo Langerman as Brazilians searched for their second league win of the season.

On the other hand, Benni McCarthy made four changes from the team which faced Polokwane City in the MTN8 quarter-final match on Saturday afternoon

Kermit Erasmus made his return to the starting line-up as the Citizens looked to record their second consecutive league victory.

The hosts got off to the perfect start as they broke the deadlock just eight minutes into the game and it took something from Hlompho Kekana.

The veteran midfielder unleashed one of his trademark long-range shots which beat City goalkeeper Peter Leeuwenburgh to make it 1-0 to Sundowns.

The Citizens then pressed the hosts as they looked to level matters and they did find the back of the net five minutes before the half-hour mark.

Edmilson Dove was the man, who scored with a superb strike which beat Sundowns goalkeeper Denis Onyango hands down to make it 1-1 for City.

The momentum was with City as the half-time break approached as Reanu Cupido hit the woodwork with a header before Uganda captain Onyango made a great save to deny Dove.

The score was 1-1- at the interval following a lively first half which saw City fight back and level matters.

Sundowns started the second half brightly as they looked to restore their lead and they unfortunate not to score their second goal through Sibusiso Vilakai,

The South Africa international hit the upright with Leeuwenburgh well-beaten after the visitors had failed to clear a corner-kick.

Keletso Makgalwa, who had scored against Bloemfontein Celtic after coming on as a substitute, was introduced by Mosimane as the PSL champions.

The promising attacker looked to use his pace to unlock the the visitors’ defence, but he had to be substituted after being injured by City captain Thamsanqa Mkhize.

The two teams then stryggled ti create clear cut chances in the latter stages of the game and ultimately, City and Sundowns settled for a 1-1 draw.

The result saw Sundowns remain fourth on the league standings, while City climbed up to fifth place on the table.
