‘We don’t need to follow the NBA’ – Brosque questions A-League finals

While Alex Brosque ended his professional football career with Sydney FC as a winner in the A-League finals, the Sky Blues veteran believes it’s time to review whether the competitions needs a finals format.

Since the A-League’s inception, a regular season has always been followed by finals in the vain of other Australian and American sports.

But with football globally generally decided by who finishes a season first, Brosque suggested it’s time the A-League considers changing its format to ensure teams that finish as premiers get the recognition they deserve.

“The fact that we have a cup competition now, maybe it is time…to look at scrapping these semis and finals,” Brosque said.

“On the day, whoever basically shows up and has a good game, or in some cases penalties, defines it.

“It’s a tough way for (Perth) to lose. It happened to us last year, we won the league by 14 points and weren’t seen as champions.

“It is Australian football, it is what it is…I get why they do it. But I don’t think we need to. I don’t think we need to follow your MLSs and your NBAs – we’re football.

“We’re football and all around the world, the best team wins the league and they’re seen as the best team.”

With further expansion and A-League independence possibly on the horizon, the relevance of finals football could be reviewed.

But as it stands, the end of season drama has once again proven a winner for Football Federation Australia with over 56,000 attending the grand final between Sydney FC and Perth Glory, while TV ratings also soared.
