Manang Marshyangdi Club notched their first ever point in the AFC Cup after a 2-2 draw against Minerva Punjab in their reverse fixture, thanks to a late equaliser from Oluwawunmi Somide.
It was also the first time the Nepalese outfit scored in the Asian competition when Abhishek Rijal scored their first goal. Manang created several opportunities early on with Afeez Oladipo denied by rival goalkeeper Arshdeep Singh who went on to block a penalty taken by Sujal Shrestha.
Kamal Shrestha would provide both the assists in the match and the hosts will be hoping Shrsestha will once again be on his game, this time in familiar surroundings. as Minerva come calling again.
Three draws in as many matches is all that Minerva Punjab have managed so far in their AFC Cup campaign. Letting any more points slip by may prove detrimental for their qualification hopes which are already dependent on the other teams in the group.
It’s the second time that Minerva allowed a team come back twice in a match after Abahani Limited Dhaka also played out a 2-2 draw with the former I-League champions.
Makan Chothe has been in good form lately, scoring one of the two in the last match while Kareem Omolaja bagged the other. Defensively, Minerva Punjab need to be more organised and focused throughout the match. But playing in unfamiliar conditions in Nepal could be a problem for the team.
