Barcelona president Bartomeu supports Champions League revamp

Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu is backing a revamp of the Champions League.

Bartomeu has admitted that it can’t be right for Los Cules to play so many matches in the tournament but so few against teams like Manchester United and Liverpool.

Manchester United‘s recent trip to the Camp Nou was their first since the 2007/08 season, whilst the Merseyside club hadn’t faced the Blaugrana in a competitive match since the 2006/07 campaign.

“It can’t be that we play so many matches but not against teams like Liverpool and United,” Bartomeu told the Guardian.

“Scarcity makes these games special, but surely it can’t be right.

“Fans ask us for more European games, and from 2024 the new format will allow that.”

The aforementioned format change is still a little unclear, however the Catalan was quick to reject suggestions it will be a closed shop for the wealthiest clubs.

“No, no, no, nobody is talking about a closed league or a Super League,” he confirmed.

“It will be an attractive evolution, not a revolution.

“We’re going to change it for the better.”
