Goals are goals are goals, and Gyasi Zardes had a curler for the ages for the US national team in a 1-0 win over Ecuador on Thursday at Orlando City Stadium.
Sure, the curl on the shot came from a deflection off an Ecuador defender, which then fooled Ecuador goalkeeper Alexander Dominguez as it sneaked it, but Zardes got the ball on target and the rest of it was out of his hands.
It’s one of the more fluky goals you’ll see, but it’s Zardes’ first goal for his country since the 2016 Copa America Centenario, and it was fair value for the USMNT performance on the night. And as Taylor Twellman said on the ESPN2 broadcast, it won’t matter exactly how it went in, but that it did, as the USMNT stay perfect through three games in the Gregg Berhalter era.
