Danny Rose urges Uefa to stand up to racism after Callum Hudson-Odoi reports incident during Chelsea match

Danny Rose has urged Uefa to make a proper stand against racism and punish Dynamo Kiev severely if the club’s fans are found guilty of abusing Chelsea starlet Callum Hudson-Odoi.

Standard Sport first revealed on Monday that Chelsea had lodged an official complaint with the governing body over Hudson-Odoi’s treatment during the second leg of their Europa League tie in Ukraine last Thursday.

The 18-year-old told captain Cesar Azpilicueta and the club that he heard monkey chants from a group of Dynamo supporters just before the final whistle. Uefa are now looking into it.

Rose was on the receiving end of monkey chants himself while playing for England under-21s against Serbia in 2012. Despite ruling against Serbia, Uefa ended up giving just a £65,000 fine and ordered them to play one under-21 game behind closed doors.

To put it in perspective, the same year they issued Denmark striker Nicolas Bendtner with an £80,000 fine for pulling down his shorts to reveal the name of a bookmaker during a match at Euro 2012.

Rose hopes Uefa make a much bigger statement over Hudson-Odoi’s situation should the allegations be proven.

He told Standard Sport: “My experience wasn’t the best during the incidents in Serbia as well as the support I got afterwards.

“I hope it’s a lot better now with Callum, people check on him and the authorities do what’s right. We saw in my case it was poorly handled.”

Hudson-Odoi has been called up to the England senior squad for the first time as they start their Euro 2020 qualifying campaign against Czech Republic on Friday night and Montenegro three days later.

Rose is still getting to know the Chelsea winger having met him properly for the first time this week. While it is early days in their relationship, the Tottenham left back wants to help Hudson-Odoi cope with the aftermath of the racist incident.

He added: “If he came to me and asked anything about it, I’d give him advice. I only heard what had happened on Monday morning.

“If Callum needed it, I’d be more than happy to make sure he’s okay and give him advice on what to do in the future.

“You have to try and take a positive from any bad situation. Maybe the positive he can take from that is he is such a good player, the fans were trying to distract him in any way possible.

“For some people the easiest thing to do is to use racism, the colour of your skin and where you come from. I just hope it doesn’t affect him in any way. You can’t let them win.”

Hudson-Odoi hasn’t started a Premier League game for Chelsea all season, but has impressed the England squad with his displays in training so far.

It has improved his chances of making his debut off the bench in one of the two matches should England be winning comfortably enough.

Rose has urged Hudson-Odoi not to let the negative experience suffered in Kiev overshadow his time with the senior squad.

“I hope it doesn’t bother him and he can move forward,” Rose said. “This is an enjoyable week now for him. It is probably one of the biggest weeks of his career, his young life. Certainly the most important football wise.

“Hopefully we can get good results over the next two games and the manager will put him on for his debut.

“It’s a credit to him that he has done so well in training so far after going through something like that. It’s been a great season for him. There have been so many positives for him and I wouldn’t like to think ignorant people can get the better of him in any shape or form.”

Rose is a huge admirer of the youngster, who was subject of four bids from Bayern Munich in January – all of which were turned down by Chelsea.

The 28-year-old had to mark Hudson-Odoi in the first leg of the EFL Cup semi-final between Spurs and Chelsea two months ago.

Even though Rose was on the winning side that night, Hudson-Odoi made a big impression on him.

“Callum gave me the hardest game I’ve had (this season),” he said. “He gave me a difficult evening when Tottenham faced him. I hope he can do that if he is given the chance to make his England debut.

“When you’re 18 and full of confidence, maybe there is not as much pressure on you. He is really strong for his age, he is direct, he can use his left and right foot.

“He doesn’t seem like the person that needs an arm around him (over his football career). He looks really confident as a player and as a person.

“He just needs to listen to his manager at Chelsea, the coaching staff with England and it looks like he will have a long and great future ahead of him.”
