Johnny Russell saved the day for Sporting Kansas City at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park on Sunday, coming off the bench to nail a dramatic late free kick that earned a 1-1 road draw against the Colorado Rapids. And the Scottish winger was involved in another potentially game-changing sequence as well.
In the 86th minute Russell saw his low cross blocked in the Rapids penalty box by a lunging Dillon Serna, and as the Colorado Homegrown got back to his feet, his hand appeared to make contact with the ball, sparking vociferous shouts for a penalty kick among Russell and the other Sporting players nearby.
You be the judge: Did Serna’s hand touch the ball? And if so, was it done with sufficient intent to deserve a PK?
In the midst of a busy night in which he passed out eight yellow cards and one ejection, referee Allen Chapman elected to let play continue, and his video assistant referee Jorge Gonzalez did not see enough evidence of a clear and obvious error to justify a video review.
